Q : Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

A: Learning foreign language at a younger age is a controversial issue. All things considered, I would argue that starting second language at primary school has many more positives because those students pick up languages much more easily and faster.
Some people are concerned about the negative side of learning a foreign language at primary school. This is because we should strike a balance between foreign language learning and other core modules. If we focus too much on a foreign language, we might sacrifice math and science learning, which are also hugely important in the balanced development of a child’s academic potential. Also focusing too heavily on a foreign language could hurt a younger student’s ability to use their mother tongue. Learning a new language can be confusing and some children struggle to cope with the challenge.
However, the arguments in favor of learning a foreign language earlier rather than later are strong. If we delay foreign language learning until secondary school, students risk missing the boat. The older we get, the less intuitive language learning becomes. Young children are also less shy generally, and not as afraid to make mistakes, which is important. As for job opportunities, in this era of globalisation, the ability to work in a foreign language is a big plus. Even if opportunities exist for those who only speak their native tongue, some employers consider a second language to be essential. The earlier children start learning a foreign language, the more likely they are to have a solid grasp of it by the time they enter the workplace.
For the reasons mentioned above, I would argue that the benefit of learning a foreign language at primary school outweigh its drawbacks because communication is key to success in life, and the earlier the better.
